Dear Priya,

Another season of Harvest celebrations is on its way and as we celebrate it with costumes, candy and fun, the Indians celebrate it with lights, fireworks, and praying to the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Laxmi.  In this issue, we look at what prosperity means to us, in terms of wealth and good health with Ayurveda principles.

How Wealthy Are You?

All over the world, on October 17th, this year, Hindus take a look at their prosperity and give gratitude for what they have and pray for what they desire.  The lessons of true wealth from this holiday can be a very useful reminder for us Americans, as we're still dealing with the every day reality of the economic woes. These are not just the lessons from India but according to a new nationwide survey by Reuters, adults were asked what lessons they learned from elders who have been through economic challenges before.

1)     Gratitude as the top response.  Simply being thankful can calm economic anxiety.
2)     Perseverance, Humor and optimism.
3)     Importance of family and friends.
4)     What to avoid.
5)     Don't listen to fears of others.

So, you see gratitude for all that you have is a lesson all cultures have learned time after time.

As a child, I used to pray to the Goddess of Wealth, thinking I'm praying for hard cold cash.  As I grew older, it sounded a little void of true spirituality until I fully understood the meaning of wealth, as it is meant to be in the Hindu tradition.

Here, true wealth means you have the wealth of prosperity, wealth of good health, wealth of knowledge, wealth of strength, wealth of family, and wealth of power.  As the whole economic system as we knew it is collapsing on itself, people are taking a second look at what success means to them.  Are you financially secure, do you have good health physically and mentally to enjoy all that you have and will have, do you have the emotional strength to do right by all, do you have healthy relationships showering you with love and support, and do you have the power within that is unshakable by any being or circumstance.

So, this fall, instead of just focusing on your bank balance wealth, take an inventory of all the other wealth in your life.  Is it up to the standard as you wish them to be? An Ayurvedic Consultation is a great way to evaluate just these things.  When you find out your body and mind's natural state of being, it is an easy way to plan and strategize your life and make decisions about health, finance, family and more.  Find out your dosha and what choices you are making in your life that is leading you to success and what choices keep you in the past.  Empower yourself with the right decision making tools for yourself.  Learn which foods to eat, and how to align your personal cycle with the cycle of nature through diet, lifestyle, meditation, yoga, pranayama, and pancha karma (internal and external cleanse).

Treatment Spotlight
Karna Purna ~ An Ancient Ritual that Effects the Mind through the Ears

Karna Purna is the simple and ancient Ayurvedic treatment that soothes and nourishes the ear with warm organic sesame oil. The ear is the seat of Vata, hence Karna Purna is a beautiful way to pacify any Vata imbalance.

What are some Vata Imbalances?
The American city lifestyle, especially Silicon Valley, has one of the most Vata unbalancing lifestyles. The constant "on the go", the multitudes of "multi-tasking", the hundred different roles one person has to play each day, are just a few reasons why our vata gets imbalanced.  Vata is associated with the element air, which has characteristics of movement. So, the more you're in constant motion, physically and mentally, the more likely your vata is imbalanced.

What are the signs of imbalance?
It's pretty easy to see signs of when your vata is imbalanced.  Here are some of the signs: When you're feeling mentally scattered, have a lack of focus, feel chatty without anything concrete to say, if you're feeling anxious and fearful without any particular reason or if you're feeling constipated, indecisive, spacey, ungrounded, agitated and easily overwhelmed by too many things happening at the same time, then your Vata is off.

Also, different weather patterns have different unbalancing acts as well. For example, yesterday I felt really scattered and did not or could not focus on the task in front of me. I kept forgetting things, kept browsing the net without really looking at anything. It was a classic case of vata imbalance which, I'm betting was caused by the cold windy day. Fall is the season when Vata is pre-dominant because of the cold and windy weather conditions.

Solution
The ideal would be to start with a warm organic vata pacifying oil massage (Abhyanga), followed by a soothing ear treatment (Karna Purna).  But you can also just get the Karna Purna by itself as well.  Come experience, how profound an effect a simple ear treatment can have on the system. After a Karna Purna people report that they find a new found clarity in their hearing. So, cut through all the chaos and noise and experience this ancient yet highly effective Ayurvedic treatment. This treatment leaves you in calm, focused and grounded.
